Who we Are

Urban Property Australia (UPA) was founded by Sam Tamblyn in 2009. Since then, our clients have included many of Australia’s leading corporates, financial institutions, superannuation funds and investors who appreciate our commitment to the highest standards of client service.

We also represent overseas clients, both expatriates and foreign buyers, looking for opportunities to invest in the Australian property market. At UPA, guiding our clients through every step of the property process is an essential part of our service. Drawing on our in-depth market knowledge, we advise on property strategy and facilitate outcomes that align with your business objectives.

Our advisory and transaction management assignments are Australia-wide, and we complete more than 3,000 commercial and residential valuations every year in the Melbourne metropolitan area and key Victorian regional centres.

When you work with UPA you’ll be working directly with highly qualified and experienced people. We are noted for the quality and extent of our research in the Australian property sphere. As a matter of course we provide our clients with regular reports on market conditions and are well qualified to undertake specific research projects on your behalf.

Management

Sam Tamblyn is the founder of UPA. He has over 21 years of local and international property industry experience in the valuation and advisory of commercial and residential property. His career has included senior roles in Melbourne, Los Angeles and New York with CB Richard Ellis, Credit Suisse and Kimco Realty Corporation.

Sam Tamblyn - Managing Director

Sam holds a Master of Science (Real Estate Development) degree from Columbia University, New York as well as a Bachelor of Business (Property) from RMIT Melbourne. He has been a Certified Practising Valuer since 2002 and is a Licensed Real Estate Agent.

As well as managing the overall direction of UPA, Sam takes a hands-on role. He personally undertakes strategic advisory assignments, valuations for banks, mortgage funds and investment companies, and property acquisitions for high net worth investors. His passion for the business and extensive industry network results in an outstanding client experience.

Advisory Board

James Hawkins - Advisory Board Member

James has over 20 years of principal investing, investment banking and corporate advisory experience in Melbourne and New York and is currently a Partner and Head of the L1 Capital Catalyst Fund.

Prior to joining L1 Capital in 2021 James spent nearly ten years at Flagstaff Partners, where he was a Managing Director that originated and executed M&A, equity and debt transactions.  Previously, he worked at Macquarie Capital in Melbourne and New York where he was involved in several successful principal investments and a wide range of investment banking transactions after beginning his career at Clayton Utz as a solicitor.  James is a generalist with experience covering a wide range of sectors including industrials, gaming, infrastructure, retail, education, and mining services.

James holds a double degree in Law and Commerce from Monash University, with Honours in Law.

Warwick Earl - Advisory Board Member

Warwick has 20 years of investment banking and legal experience and is currently a Managing Director at Grant Samuel, a prominent independent Australian investment bank in mergers and acquisition and corporate advisory services.

Prior to joining Grant Samuel in 2005, Warwick worked as a lawyer with Minter Ellison in their Mergers and Acquisitions group.

As an external strategic adviser Warwick brings a crucial independent perspective to UPA, in addition to an extensive network of corporate and banking clients throughout Melbourne and Australia.

Our Team

UPA has a team of highly qualified, experienced valuers and advisors with a diverse range of skills. They have many years of experience and training with some of the biggest property companies, agencies and valuers in Australia. All our valuers and advisors have formal tertiary property degrees.

To maintain best practice, every member of our valuation team must:

  • be a Certified Member of the Australian Property Institute (API), with AAPI designations;
  • carry up-to-date Continued Professional Development training credits through the API; and
  • have attended and meet ongoing requirements of the API’s Risk Management Module.

Record

Our recent advisory assignments have included providing detailed and in-depth valuation and research services to institutional developers for apartment developments, identifying joint venture opportunities, advising on lot pricing for subdivisions and acquiring commercial and residential investments for high net worth individuals.
